week 8: multimedia on the Internet

Like its name suggests, multimedia is different from media in that it uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio, graphics, animation, video, and so on. The power of multimedia lies in how it is able to provide information through entertainment, and has the power to go viral quickly, which is largely seen in how companies use multimedia to market their products.

One way companies do this is through the use of webcasting, which is broadcasting a video/media file over the Internet. This is effective because a large number of the online population spend their time watching videos. One popular example is Youtube, which accounted for 99% of the total number of videos watched on Google sites in November 2009. The total number of videos viewed? 12.2 billion.

The use of multimedia is also seen in the education field, and one example is how us com125 students watch a variety of videos in class each week. Without multimedia, we would have to read textbooks to get our information instead of having a fun and interactive learning environment. Another example is how computer-based training courses can be created through multimedia, which allow users to sit through presentations. Such lessons are informally termed edutainment, showing how the use of multimedia can provide an education that is entertaning. In fact, Temasek Poly even offers a part-time diploma in "Interactive Edutainment", which is designed to help people develop interactive and engaging courseware. The introduction of this course suggests that the use of multimedia is getting more popular, and I believe we will see more of multimedia being used in different fields, and in more creative ways in time to come.
